effective communication is essential in healthy relationships. almost every couple that comes to therapy reports communication as a central issue.


4-6 sessions

listening to understand

In this session, couples will learn the communication feedback loop and how to eliminate misunderstandings on day one! Couples will receive in-depth psychoeducation regarding the implementation of structured communication and effective feedback. Couples will establish ground rules regarding communication that they can practice throughout the week.

Barriers to Communication

In session two, couples will become more aware of their barriers to communication and develop ways to overcome them. This session will contain some “process work” as you begin to explore past experiences and how they influence current functioning.

communication styles

In week three, couples will gain insight into their communication style and learn how to communicate assertively. Additional communication tools will be learned to enhance the couple’s ability to express feelings, wants, and needs.

scenario-based excersise

In week four, couples will have the opportunity to demonstrate the use of their newly learned communication skills. The therapist will assess and guide the couple through role-playing and scenario-based exercises to fine-tune the areas of improvement.

validation

In this week, couples will be introduced to the concept of validation and learn how to engage in alternative perspectives. Couples will gain the ability to see problems through the eyes of their partner and learn to verbalize understanding while disagreeing.

Resolution

In the final week, couples will address their “unsolvable problems” and work toward reframing their approach to these issues. Emphasis will be on how to resolve historically conflictual disagreements through submission and compromise.
